Tips for Learning A New Skill

1. Ditch Your Current Learning Method(s)

How do you learn things? Are you a visual learner? Are you someone who enjoys reading to learn new things?

The first step to learning a new skill is to figure out your way of learning and then to try out new methods to see if any of them are a better fit.

Most people are creatures of habit and usually tend to stick to methods that they’ve been using their entire lives.

Whatever you do, don’t stick to old habits when learning new things. Try ditching your current learning method and see how easy you can pick up new skills by trying new techniques.

2. Assign a Meaning to Your New Skill(s)

Make sure that whatever skill you are picking up on has a purpose. Putting a meaning to your new skill will provide you with the much needed motivation that we all lack when we’re comfortable.

Step outside of the box and apply a meaning to whatever it is you’re currently learning and you’ll likely see more meaningful results.

3. Practice Makes Perfect

While it’s true that some people can pick up on skills on the very first try, others require practice to learn and perfect new things in their lives.

Don’t be discouraged if you can’t nail something on the first try. Simply try again and continue to practice until you get a solid hang of it.

4. Find Inspiration

Analyze those who inspire you, those who have learned to master the skill you are trying to learn.

For example if you are a person who goes to bed late and wakes up late every morning but you are trying to become a morning person, ZTS recommends that you create a proper morning routine for yourself.

Nobody said it would be easy but is it possible to adjust your sleep schedule and become a better you? Absolutely.

Picking up on new habits isn’t always easy to do, which is why you need to get inspired by someone who actually knows more about a specific topic than you do.

Follow along to see how they do it, analyze their routine, and start applying what you’ve learned to your own life.

5. Teach What You Learn

As a great way to be practicing what you have learned, is by teaching others what you already know.

This shows you and others that you’re already a master when it comes to certain subjects and that you are ready to share that information with whoever it is that wants to learn.

It also shows how passionate you are about a subject.

You know you are only going to share what you truly know and for that reason teaching others will only help you improve your own skills.

6. Dedication

Is your latest skill or habit taking longer than normal to learn? Sounds like you might need to invest more time and effort on learning these new skills of yours.

The extra time and effort that you dedicate to whatever is taking you longer to learn will only help you to improve those skills in the future.

7. Take Breaks

Don’t think you have to learn everything in one day.

Taking breaks while learning something is extremely important, in order to give your brain enough rest to pick up on the information.

You might remember in your old school days, how trying to memorize something the day before the test was the hardest thing to do, as you got stressed and frustrated and even felt towards the end that your brain couldn’t retain any more information.

This is exactly what happens when you wear out your brain after a long day of learning.

Make sure you don’t push yourself to exhaustion, take it little by little and allow your brain to process the information correctly by giving it time and breaks.

A great way of incorporating breaks into your daily life and work schedule is to us something known as The Pomodoro Technique which we talk about often here on Zero to Skill.

The Pomodoro Technique is one of the best productivity hacks of all time.

This technique allows you to work on a project or task for a period of 25 minutes.

After each 25 minute period, you take a 5-10 minute break.

After reaching four segments of 25 minutes you are instructed to give yourself a longer break of 15 to 30 minutes to give your brain enough time to set and process the information while still maintaining your level of productivity.

You can learn more about productivity in our Ultimate Guide to Productivity.

8. Quiz Yourself

No one is ever going to question your skills. You are your teacher.

Test yourself when learning any new habit or skill and make sure you are on top of your game and see how much you’ve progressed since you started.

Quiz yourself, take notes, create notecards and don’t stop advancing.

9. Find a Mentor

Finding a teacher and/or mentor will almost always be your best bet when compared to self learning or self teaching.

A teacher is usually someone that is an expert on a subject and for that reason they can help you learn new things in ways you might not have ever thought of before.

Finding a mentor might be easier than learning for yourself as you can have someone to tell you if you are doing things right.

10. Stay Ambitious

Don’t settle for just one new skill, whenever you start picking up on something new, always strive to learn more.

Keep yourself at the top of your game, and don’t just settle for learning one new skill.

Improve yourself by checking out what other potential skills are out there that might add value to your life.
